I remember my first flight across Atlantic to Canada, looking out of the window and being in awe of the vast Atlantic beneath me. From time to time one would spot a tiny speck on the ocean's surface, a ship plowing its shipping lane like an ant on nature's surface. Perhaps the flight passed over the Grand Banks where the great ship lay broken on the ocean floor. This image commemorates in an elegiac form the maiden voyage of the Titanic.
I have placed on the bows of the ship, The Titanic Memorial Sculpture which is now placed in a memorial garden at Belfast City Hall.
Over the years that I have passed by the sculpture, I have found it a fitting and moving tribute to the disaster. This year has seen the opening of Titanic Belfast, which is dedicated to the history of the Titanic and of shipbuilding in Belfast, putting it into the social history of the period.
