Gerry Gleason has been working as an artist for 36 years. He has
had numerous solo exhibitions and been included in many group
shows in Ireland, Europe and America. He is a member of the
artists’ collective, Queen Street Studios in Belfast, where he
still works.Gleason cites Picasso, Matisse and Bacon as his influences.
His approach, often using symbolic references, seeks to explore
human nature and society under extreme stress. Rocket Man, with
its sinister figure bedecked with crosses, references themes of
violence and loss of life. As well as being an instrument of death,
the rocket itself can be viewed as an Irish round tower, a place of
protection from where the outside world can be watched safely and
without fear.Gerry Gleason axisweb.org
If you look at magnificent later work like "The Ulster Saga",you find much more complex meditations upon violence in relation to the history of the North-and it is no accident that Gleason's paintings are being rediscovered by younger generations of Northern Irish painters who never knew such work even existed. Like so many of the unsung Northerners,Gleason is appreciated much more abroad. B McAvera critic and playwright.
