Art Works > Exploring Drawing Techniques and Drawing Materials: From the Ice Age to the present.

This work is loosely based on a painting of Saskia by Rembrandt. Some art historians have argued that it is a posthumous portrait of Saskia, because Saskia is holding a spring of Rosemary. Rosemary was used in History paintings as a symbol of remembrance. Rembrandt & Saskia were very happy in their marriage and Saskia's loss was a terrible blow to Rembrandt. They say that her death was due to the many difficult childbirths she had and the rudimentary mother and baby childcare after births, of that period in History. I have used the pen and ink to imply different textures in places.
