Art Works > Exploring Drawing Techniques and Drawing Materials: From the Ice Age to the present.

I have always liked the directness and use of line in Matisse's drawings. He used a technique quite often of cropping the head at the top of the page to heighten it's tension. I have liked his charcoal drawings from the Nice Period with much rubbing out, reinstating the image again and the technique of stumping. I have used an eraser in this drawing of the hair to bring out some highlights, the erasure a drawing tool in itself. Then gently rubbed the pastel in places to give a hazy feeling to the drawing. Matisse valued his drawing as much as his paintings through out his lifetime.
