This drawing was based on a much earlier lighter work of Goya's of a famous Actress. When I was working on the drawing it seemed to reflect Goya's late dark period. This can happen when your are working, a work can change from a lighter mood to a more sombre mood. Goya's work it has been said is a bridge between the 18th and 20th Century Art. His work an earlier precursor of the 20th Century, a period of intolerance, inhumanity and War, which seemed to me to chime with 20th Century. For me he was one of the first modernist. Some of the Artists who admired Goya's work were Picasso & Francis Bacon.
