Tribute to Vincent van Gogh series. Gleason.2012.
I have always admired Vincent's portrait of Pere Tanguy with innovatary treatment of space and character. The background of the original picture displays Vincents great love of Japanese prints, which were to have great effect on his art. Tanguy seems to have been a very kind and generous supporter of the artists whom
Vincent knew at that time in Paris, before his departure for Arles. He was an artists'supplier, amongst many things ands often took paintings in lieu of payments for materials. His poor wife was often at the end of her tether at his generosity and being left with canvases the artists could not sell.Sadly,Tanguy was sitting on a fortune in today's terms, as these very same trade ins are much sought after by collectors and Museums. in the present.
Perhaps in the title I have alluded to the austerity period both artists and the public are now living through.
