While I am sitting here writing this piece, the wind is whistling round me. it can be a very disconcerting sound. In Provence at certain times of the year The Mistral (which translate from the French as masterly wind) blows at full strength. The artist Vincent van Gogh would venture out in these treacherous conditions,
he was interested in catching movement, the effects on the landscape, sea etc. In his letters to
his brother Theo (a highly recommended read) he describes the travails of such exploits. At times his paintings would blow off the easel, or sand from the beach would pepper their surface.
Such was his commitment (not unlike Turner) in which he has left a record for use to enjoy without the discomfort. In my image he is battling in the windy conditions, his face caught in motion, looking at the distant motif.
