I visited the Berlin Nationalgalerie just before the fall of the Berlin Wall in Jan of 1989.It was a cold day and I entered the gallery to be faced by the burning heat of George Grosz's masterpiece
The Pillars of Society 1926, produced during the Weimar period. Along with Otto Dix and others
their works made a scathing comment on the society of their day. Though one could say certain factors in our time mirror theirs, I think in the back of my mind, these images influenced my work, albeit it is a more modest image in intention. At the time of making the work, I came across a plastic skeleton in a pound-type shop, this became a recurring feature in the series.
