As a young man I lived through the cold war period with all the paranoia surrounding it. At the time of the
Cuban missile crisis the world held its breath with the real possibility of mutual destruction. When good sense prevailed we all breathed a sigh of relief. My own hope for the future is that these huge arsenals that still exist are
constantly reduced. Aeschylus the great Greek tragic poet in his play the Oresteia dealt with war and particularly its aftermath. My one hope is that developing nations do not see these dreadful instruments of war as status symbols to be had and that the Furies still trouble our conscience to stay our hand.
