Exploring Drawing Techniques and Drawing Materials: From the Ice Age to the present.
Frans Hals (1581-1666), Was born 25 years before Rembrandt. Rembrandt must have looked at Hals work as a young artist. Hals would have have been well established when Rembrandt was forging his early career. I recently visited a large exhibition in London of Hals work and seen his amazing draughtsmanship and virtuoso paint handling. Hals seemed to find the joyous side of life more attractive to him, from Rich merchants to poorer musicians in the local Taverns he treated them all equally. When Rembrandt reached his maturity to me he surpassed Hals with his compositional strength and insight into the human condition. Vincent van Gogh greatly admired both painters. In my interpretation I have taken a modernist approach to the work displayed with heightened colours and distortions.
